Marvel’s newest release takes us back to space with the return of the Guardians of the Galaxy, reminding us what we loved about the first film three years ago while giving us more in terms of emotional depth.
The out of the world visuals are as energetic as ever, constantly providing the audience with something new and exciting to look at. And while at times the humour feels a little too familiar – Vol. 2 is another sequel that isn’t quite above the occasional rehash – the jokes flow naturally and easily between the colourful cast of characters.
But perhaps most satisfying is the way the latest instalment directly follows the relationships we saw develop into a team at the end of the first film. We’re reminded why we care about what happens to this oddball group of misfits and criminals – because they do. On numerous levels and in several surprising moments, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 delves into what exactly makes a group of friends a family.
